MORE TO BE DESIRED THAN GOLD

19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb
19:11 Moreover by the is thy servant warned; and in keeping of them there is great reward who can understand his errors?
19:12 Cleanse thou me from secret faults
19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
According to international trade standards, gold is seen as one of the precious metals that has a very high value. Fine gold is the highest quality of gold.
Honey is considered to be very sweet, perhaps sweeter than sugar as very small quantities of honey gives a sweeter taste than sugar.
It is difficult to tell what the psalmist is talking about without reading Psalm 19:9 From verse 9, one can tell that psalmist is talking about the direction, laws or word of God.
The adjective used to describe the word of God, gold and honey shows that the word of God is very important for the Christian. A verse by verse analysis of the passage quoted above would be done to bring out the importance of the word.
Psalm 19:10
Another translation says:
They are worth more than gold, even the purest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even the finest honey.
The psalmist is trying to say that gold is valuable. It is worth more than the finest gold and sweeter or soothing to the soul.
Meaning, the word of God can lead or direct you in times of need and help you overcome a challenge or win a victory in any situation. The word of God is priceless.
It is sweeter because it can bring you joy in time of sorrow and peace in the time of tribulations.
Psalm 23:4 says:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
In time of trouble, this verse of scripture will remind you that although you are in danger, the Lord is with you to guide and comfort you.
You cannot get this kind of comfort and hope from any other place than from the word of God.
Psalm 19:11
This verse says the word warns or cautions us and obeying what the word says gives great reward or blessings.
For instance, John 15:6 says If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
The verse above is warning Christians that if you do not obey the word (abide in the Lord) you will be destroyed (cast into the fire and burnt).
However; John 15:7 says
If you obey the word, then you shall have whatever you ask God for (have great rewards) as Psalm 19:11 states.
This verse is a plea to God to save us from errors or sins. Sometimes we cannot even understand why we do the wrong things.
Romans 7:18-19
For I know (that in me is in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
We really need God to cleanse us from our faults especially the hidden or secret faults which cannot be seen easily by those around us.
Psalm 19:13
In this verse the Psalmist is asking God to keep Him away from sin and prevent him from being overcome by sin. God should also help him to be upright or righteous.
God can help you to be upright only when you have studied the word of God very well such that when you are tempted to sin, He will remind you of scripture verses that show clearly that what you are going to do is wrong.
That is why the word of God is to be desired more than gold: it has everything we need to live a good Christian life that is pleasing to God.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 says
The things that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: there is no new thing under the sun.
There is nothing new under the sun, meaning, every event or problem has occurred before. The bible has accounts of several issues which happened before Jesus came and after Jesus came with solutions and lessons to be learnt.
Study the word thoroughly and allow it to guide you in all issues of life.
